Tigers mauled by Brahmans at Les Stagg oval
RUGBY LEAGUE: Players of the Brahmans A-Grade woke on Sunday morning bruised and battered after what team manager, Bryce Fraser, described as an intensely physical encounter.
The second last encounter on home soil before the semi-final round of the Mackay and District rugby league competition delivered yet another win for the Brahmans against West Tigers, but it came at a cost.
Fraser said a number of key players left the field with injuries during the 33 to 10 point victory in Proserpine on Saturday night.
A bit of second half biffo saw one Brahman player sin-binned, which allowed the Tigers to post a few points but until this incident rock solid defence from the 2017 runners up kept the Tigers scoreless.
"(Capitan) Phil (Ramage) was very happy with the defence at half time and hoped to keep them scoreless for the whole game but we let them in for a couple of tries in the second half," Fraser said.
Fraser said though the Brahmans were scored against while down a player they also put on one try on their own.
Brahman stalwart in the front row, Ivan Petelo, took out the man of the match award for his "brutal defence" of the Brahmans' line and also had quite a few piercing runs.
Centre, Michael Newman also played well on Saturday night and scored another hat-rick against the Wests Tigers.
Next week the Brahmans head to Moranbah to do battle with the Miners in what is expected to be a tough outing against the fifth placed side.
"It always is tough road trip and next week wont be any different especially with a couple of players out. We will be really drawing on that depth to try and get a two wins out at Moranbah," Fraser said.
The A-Grade Brahmans are currently sitting in third place behind Wests and the Souths sharks are ranked at the top of the table.
Fraser said the minor premiership looks out of the teams reach with only four games left before the semi-final round.
In other games the Under-19 defeated west Tigers 22-18 and Reserve Grade went down 16-12.
Fraser gave a big thumbs up to A-Grade team sponsors, the Metropole Hotel, Zambreros Cannonvale and the Magnums Hotel.
He also thanked Powered by Murphy and NQ Glass for their ongoing sponsorship.
