CRICKET: With lightning and thunder rattling the Kelsey Creek Cricket Grounds and the heavens opening, Saturday's match between Canecutters and Valleys was declared a wash-out, with the teams sharing the points for the match.

However there was still a game to be played with a 12 over-a-side scratch match played between the two sides in between rain delays.

Batting first, Tony Hinschen (23) led the way for Valleys with a well measured innings before falling victim to Dave Vickers (1/28). Aaron Regan took over from Hinschen, putting on 24 runs of his own to put Valleys in a good position.

Youngster Jayden Lane (2/30) and Wayne Smith (2/15) shone with the ball before the rain struck at the 12 over mark causing another delay. This saw Valleys finish with a total of 90 runs from their 12 overs.

After the break, Canecutters were sent in to bat with Jayden Lane picking up where he left off to put in a great all-round effort, scoring 21 with the blade before Nick Cantrill (1/15) rattled the wickets. Brett Simpson (1/10) and Aaron Regan (1/8) picked up the other wickets for Valleys.

The two Wayne's, Wayne Smith (22 not out) and Wayne Lane (19) kept Canecutters in the game, however it was not enough to chase down Valleys total, with Canecutters falling short by 10 runs after their 12 overs.

The result sees the end of regular fixtures in the 2016/2017 Proserpine Cricket Association season with the finals to now take place.

Valleys finished the regular season on top of the points table and automatically qualify for the Grand Final on April 1.

This Saturday will see Canecutters battle with Warriors in the semi-final with the winner to meet Valleys to crown the 2016/17 season winner.
